About the Show
They say that when a great storm is coming, a figure in gray appears on the beach — walking alone, warning anyone who will listen to leave the island. Those who see him are spared.
Inspired by the folklore of coastal Carolina, The Gray Man is a new musical — told across three hurricanes — about the people we keep reaching for, and the cost of letting them go.
The Journey
The development of The Gray Man, plotted the way the coast plots a storm.
2024 — A Disturbance in the Water
The first song, “Riptide”, is written in January 2024 and performed that May as part of a solo show in Raleigh, North Carolina.
2025 — Wind Circulates
A public table read with the Tennessee Stage Company New Play Festival, songs in concert at Joe’s Pub in New York City, and a private table read in New York.
2026 — The Storm Strengthens
A 29-hour reading with Carolina Theatre Workshop in Raleigh, a Kickstarter with more than fifty backers across the country, and the concept album — recorded with North Carolina and Broadway artists, releasing October 2026.
January 2027 — First Landfall
The Gray Man makes landfall in Knoxville, presented in partnership with the Clarence Brown Theatre (LORT) and the Tennessee Stage Company New Play Festival — with a concert presentation at Joe’s Pub in New York City to follow in spring 2027.
